More than 670 Hunting and Fishing Groups Demand Climate Action

"There isn't a legislator worth his salt that wouldn't be paying attention to the local hunters and fishermen in their state," said Sen. John Warner (R-VA) at a press conference yesterday on Capitol Hill. What message were hunters and anglers delivering?

Pass strong legislation that addresses global warming and protects fish and game species from a changing climate.

More than 670 hunting and fishing organizations representing all 50 states signed their names to a letter urging Congress to pass legislation that cuts global warming pollution 2% per year.

Yesterday's press conference, which marked the delivery of this letter, was attended by dozens of hunters and anglers, including Simon Roosevelt (T.R.'s great-great grandson) and David Crockett (Davy's great-great-great grandson). Sen Warner and Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA) also made statements in support of sportsmen's efforts.

The hunters and anglers who flew in for the event are today on Capitol Hill, meeting with their Members of Congress to lobby for the Climate Stewardship Act and other strong 2% legislation.

Download the full-page ad that ran in yesterday's USA Today (pdf).

Read the sign-on letter

What organizations signed on?

Press release

Video from Carbon-Neutral Sailfish Tournament

Check out a video from the first carbon-neutral fishing tournament in Miami, FL. Everything from boat bags, banquets, hotels, air fare, trips to dock, boat fuel, etc. is being factored into the final carbon footprint calculation and offset with "climate mitigation credits." These credits will capture methane gas from dairy farms and convert it into electricity, effectively balancing out the event's greenhouse gas emissions.

Ducks Spark Change of Heart for Lincoln

Three years ago, Sen. Blanche Lincoln (R-Ark.) voted against the Climate Stewardship Act, a bipartisan bill to cut global warming pollution. On the recently re-introduced 2007 version, however, she's one of the bill's co-sponsors.

What caused the change in heart? Fewer ducks flying south for winter to Arkansas.

"My husband and I want our boys to have the opportunity to hunt on the same lands that their grandfathers and our grandfathers hunted on," she said in a Senate Environment & Public Works Committee hearing yesterday.

Click to read her entire testimony...

California Tackles Global Warming

If California was a country, it would be the 12th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. However, California-the-State is doing some interesting things to change that, including a new bill in the state legislature, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32).

Global warming, Al Gore and a slide show--not exactly your typical summer blockbuster. But for those of you who gave the movie a shot, maybe you discovered something you didn't expect to find. Or maybe you expected everything and can't believe you wasted two hours of your life on the thing.

Whatever you thought, you thought it. Now share it. All you have to do is click the orange comment link right under this post and type a few sentences.
