The average first frost in Concord, according to one seed company, occurs on Sept. 8, but tomatoes are still ripening in Concord gardens. Last Christmas, hardy flowers bloomed in some dooryards, and the official state amphibian, the spotted newt, was seen out and about. The respite from the cold is keeping heating bills down, but it's scary.
It's against this weather backdrop that a who's who of New Hampshire environmental groups, public officials and scientists are holding a climate conference that begins in Manchester today with welcoming remarks by Gov. John Lynch.
