His opponents belittle his election-year turnaround on global warming, but give the senator credit for finally supporting a climate-change bill O-regon Sen. Gordon Smith, once a dependable opponent of major climate change bills, basked in praise Friday from environmentalists seeking such legislation.

"We are frankly delighted with Senator Smith," said Jeremy Symons, global warming program director for the National Wildlife Federation in Washington, D.C. "We see him and Martinez (Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla.) as Senate bellwethers on this issue."
